The chalkboard/white board is one of the most useful and effective teaching tools I use, and I use it almost every time I teach. It reaches those who are visual learners. If I can "show" a concept with a picture or words, the students are using more senses to learn: hearing and seeing.
A lot of times when I write on the board, the class is writing with me on their own paper, or I pass out copy of what I've written or drawn. If it's intensive, I choose someone from the class to be a scribe so I can keep my attention on the class.
